SUNRISE, Fla.-- Tommy Wingels made up for an early mistake and helped the San Jose Sharks continue their winning ways on the road.

The San Jose forward scored the game-winning goal at 8:53 of the third period to cap a comeback as the Sharks beat the Florida Panthers 4-2 at BB&T Center on Thursday.

Chris Tierney won a faceoff in the offensive zone to give the Sharks possession as San Jose battled back after a 2-0 deficit.

Wingels then gathered the puck, forced his way through the crease and slid a backhander past Florida goaltender James Reimer for the deciding goal.

"(I got) a good jump off the faceoff, was able to get some good body position, poked it by the D-man and found a way to bury it," Wingels said of his second goal this season.

Brent Burns, Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture also scored for the Sharks (8-6-0).

Couture's goal, his third, into the empty net sealed the win and gave San Jose its second consecutive road win to start a six-game trip. The Sharks beat Washington 3-0 on Tuesday.

Joel Ward, Patrick Marleau, Tierney and Justin Braun recorded assists for San Jose.

"The first period was not very good," said Sharks coach Pete DeBoer, whose club trailed 2-0 before the middle of the first period. "Burns got a big goal to keep us in it.

"We came in and regrouped and I liked our game from there forward."

Jason Demers scored twice for Florida (6-7-1).

Jared McCann, Aleksander Barkov and Jaromir Jagr had assists.

Martin Jones posted 22 saves for San Jose.

Reimer had 25 saves for the Panthers.

Florida's first goal came after Wingels tried to block a shot by Demers -- the first of his two goals.

Florida opened the scoring at 5:09 in a fiery first period when Jared McCann sent a puck diagonally cross-ice from the corner to Demers, whose blast from above the right circle deflected in off Wingels' stick.

"I tried to block the shot. My bad," Wingels admitted.

Demers, who was drafted by San Jose in 2008 and played five-plus seasons with the Sharks, made it 2-0 at 7:26 when he chipped in a loose puck near the crease after Jagr's shot from the right circle bounced off Barkov.

"The first eight minutes of the game, we got a lot of pucks to the net and we were battling," said Florida coach Gerard Gallant. "After that, San Jose kept us away from the net and we didn't have many good chances."

San Jose erased the two-goal deficit in a second period that became testy after Burns clipped Florida defenseman Keith Yandle and sent him to the ice behind a rush.

Burns cut into the lead when he flipped the puck past Reimer for his sixth goal, an unassisted one, at 16:18 after blocking a shot by Yandle.

Pavelski tied it 2-2 at 1:53 after stealing a puck from Alex Petrovic and beating Reimer high over his left shoulder for his fifth goal.

"He's a good player, and I probably gave him too much respect. He made a good shot," said Reimer, who made eight starts for San Jose last year on their way to the Stanley Cup Final.

Demers said Florida's blowing early leads has been a problem all year.

"It's been a trend since early in the year and we've got to fix it soon. It's embarrassing. We keep getting games like this and playing hard, but mental errors and mental mistakes by all of us," he said.

"We let off the gas and let teams back in the games. It's been happening all year and it's between the ears right now."

Added Gallant: "We gave them the goals, they didn't deserve the goals. We gave them the three goals.

"If we give up leads and make it a habit, we're going to have a tough season."
